Scaling the Web

چکیده
T raditionally, access to services offered over the World Wide Web has relied on the interaction between a browser and a Web server using the HTTP protocol. More recently, programmatic access to services over the Web, called Web services, has been the subject of intense activity and standardization efforts.1-2 In this new model, Web service providers use the Web Services Description Language (WSDL)3 to describe the services they provide and how to invoke them. The service providers then register their services in a public service registry using universal description, discovery, and integration (UDDI).4 Application programs discover services in the registry and obtain a URL for the WSDL file that describes the service. Then, the applications can invoke the services using the XML-based simple object access protocol (SOAP) in either asynchronous messaging or remote procedure call (RPC) mode.1,5 Figure 1 illustrates the concept of Web services and how the model differs from that of traditional access to a Web site. Traditional Web sites (Figure 1a) implement all components needed to carry out user transactions: user interface and navigation management, business logic, and access to persistent storage. Web services sites give users access to some or all of these services through programs that provide these services over the Web, as Figure 1b shows. In this case, the travel site uses Web services applications for airline booking, hotel reservation, and car rental reservation.

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods
Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...
متن کاملImplicational Scaling of Reading Comprehension Construct: Is it Deterministic or Probabilistic?
In English as a Second Language Teaching and Testing situations, it is common to infer about learners’ reading ability based on his or her total score on a reading test. This assumes the unidimensional and reproducible nature of reading items. However, few researches have been conducted to probe the issue through psychometric analyses. In the present study, the IELTS exemplar module C (1994) wa...
متن کاملScaling and Fractal Concepts in Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: Comparison of Some Models
Measurement of soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, is normally affected by flow patterns such as macro pore; however, most current techniques do not differentiate flow types, causing major problems in describing water and chemical flows within the soil matrix. This study compares eight models for scaling Ks and predicted matrix and macro pore Ks, using a database composed of 50 datasets...
متن کاملA Longitudinal Study of Small-Time Scaling Behavior of Internet Traffic
During the last decade, many new Web applications have emerged and become extremely popular. Together, these new “Web 2” applications have changed how people use the Web and the Internet. In light of these changes, we conduct a longitudinal study of the small-time scaling behavior of Internet traffic using network traffic traces, available from the MAWI repository, that span a period of eight y...
متن کاملAuto-Scaling of Geo-Based Image Processing in an OpenStack Cloud Computing Environment
Cloud computing is a base platform for the distribution of large volumes of data and high-performance image processing on the Web. Despite wide applications in Web-based services and their many benefits, geo-spatial applications based on cloud computing technology are still developing. Auto-scaling realizes automatic scalability, i.e., the scale-out and scale-in processing of virtual servers in...
